With the launch of its new line of visual computing workstations, high end graphics hardware maker Silicon Graphics has made its much anticipated first move onto the desktop PC playing field. The Silicon Graphics 320 and Silicon Graphics 540 comprise SGI’s new line of boxes based on the Intel chip and the ever more dominant Microsoft NT platform. At press time pricing on the new workstations had not been announced but the entry level box is said to cost under us$3500. Mountain View, Calif.-based SGI has long been a leader in high performance visual computing and its typically Unix-based gear is used widely for the creation of high end visual effects as well as for comuter design applications. The 320 can be configured with up to two Intel Pentium II 450 MHz processors and the 540 can be configured with up to four Intel processors.
