Gem of a weekend

A moving tribute to an ailing Jim Burt, cbc head of movies and miniseries, was the emotional highlight of the 13th Gemini Awards, which took place in its new fall time slot Oct. 2, 3 and 4 in Toronto.

Flanked by companion Penny Wheelwright and sister Nancy Taylor (who also read his acceptance speech), Burt was presented with an Academy Achievement Award for a 20-year career in which he has overseen a multitude of cbc projects, including The Boys of St. Vincent, Conspiracy of Silence and Million Dollar Babies.

As for the awards, Rhombus Media and tvontario walked away with the lion’s share for the six-part series Yo Yo Ma: Inspired By Bach – taking home 10 Geminis. The combined Alliance Atlantis also won 10 Geminis, but for numerous projects including best dramatic series for Traders – the second straight year.

Halifax’s Salter Street Films won seven Geminis for its cbc miniseries Major Crime and weekly satire show This Hour Has 22 Minutes, which amongst others, took best comedy series – also for the second year in a row.

Following is the complete list of Gemini and Prix Gemeaux winners, announced late last month in Montreal.
