– Teraglobal plans routerless net

Video Stream International, founded in Vancouver, has closed its exchange offer for San Diego-based TechnoVision Communications to form a combined entity geared to creating a group of technology products and services to deliver realtime networked communications.

Operating under the name Teraglobal Communications, the new company is developing a Mac- and Power pc-based product to allow 30-frames-per-second video conferencing and full-data streaming over one terminal without the use of a router, which will allow users to communicate over several bandwidth configurations.

The service is not Internet-based but built around ‘server cluster topology,’ whereby the company is placing server clusters at several locations across North America, allowing users to access the service from the nearest cluster through a terminal leased from Teraglobal.

The system has cost and speed benefits over those using a router, says Teraglobal’s Darren Seed, with a router accounting for about 50% to 60% of a network’s cost.

The company has developed a network technology with Apple and Fire Wire to allow those on the network to communicate with differing connections – like atm and isdn lines – with the potential of having a multipoint connection of up to 200 users on one file.

Teraglobal has approached companies like Disney and Pixar to showcase the system’s entertainment applications, and will have new product demonstrations in September.
