CBC Newsworld’s fall lineup offers some old faces in new places and a schedule that includes nine new daily and weekly programs, effective Sept. 7.
Avi Lewis has jumped The New Music ship to host counterSpin, a half-hour debate program, Monday through Thursday at 8:30 p.m. MuchMusic spokesperson Sandra Puglielli says Lewis is leaving on very good terms and that Much will announce a new host and format for New Music in September.
Newsworld and Salter Street Films have joined together to produce a weekly half-hour business program, Canadian Investor, to air on Fridays at 6:30 p.m., repeated Friday at 11:30 p.m., Saturday at 3 p.m. and Sunday at 8 a.m. and noon. Three experts and a special guest will join host Pat Blandford, a senior Bay Street financial advisor and former CBC Radio broadcaster, each week to discuss the latest business news.
CBC Morning, with a new team, a new look and a fresh approach, will air live Monday to Friday from 6:30 a.m. to 9:00 a.m. Hosts are Nancy Wilson in Toronto, Norma Lee MacLeod in Halifax, money man Pat Bolland and sports/weather reporter Colleen Jones. New cohost Mark Kelley, the cbc’s national reporter in Montreal, will join MacLeod in Halifax.
Benmergui
Ralph Benmergui will be doing double duty for Newsworld this fall. As host of Not Just the News, a weekly one-hour program, Benmergui and his alternating studio guests will examine the difference between what Canadian news media and political satirists have to say about current events. The show is skedded for Fridays at 11 p.m. (a slot he should be familiar with), repeated Saturdays at 11 p.m. and Sundays at 8 p.m. Benmergui’s afternoon phone-in show Benmergui Live will return Monday through Thursday at noon.
Pamela Wallin will also be moonlighting with her new talk show Pamela Wallin: Friday’s Company on Fridays at 10 p.m. Billed as ‘a swingin’ house party,’ Wallin will be chillin’ with a different special cohost each week, and instead of interviewing guests, she will lead the group’s conversation about ideas, trends and events. Wallin’s more reserved interview/talk show will return Monday through Thursday at 10 p.m.
Judy Rebick will go solo in Straight from the Hip, a weekly half-hour ‘gathering of some of Canada’s smartest and sharpest women discussing hot news stories and social issues.’ The show will air Fridays at 11 a.m.
Two Eyes
Passionate Eye, the weekly doc series, has become so popular that it now has two editions. Passionate Eye Friday will air at 8 p.m., repeated at 3 a.m., and Passionate Eye will return to Sundays at a new time, 10 p.m.
Anne Petrie will host Absolutely Canadian, Monday to Friday at 4 p.m. The one-hour program is divided into two sections – one based on news and issues and the other on magazine-style feature stories. Newsworld’s production centers in Halifax, Calgary, Toronto, Vancouver and Ottawa will all contribute to the program.
Petrie’s TalkTv returns to the schedule at a new time, Monday to Thursday at 11 p.m. She will also host The Moral Divide, a weekly program on the religious, spiritual and moral issues behind the news. The show debuts in December.
Returning to the schedule are Daniel Richler’s Big Life, On the Arts with Laurie Brown, Hot Type with host Evan Solomon, Rough Cuts and a slew of Newsworld favorites.
