Atlantis’ Life Network and HGTV Canada have unveiled their fall lineups, with Life adding eight new series, HGTV Canada picking up two of Life’s how-to programs, and HGTV U.S. buying four Canadian shows.
Life’s new Canadian-produced half-hour shows will appear on the fall sked, starting Sept. 21.
They include Dish It Out (Dish It Out, Toronto), a 13-episode cooking show with host Christine Cushing; The Inn Chef (Ocean Entertainment, Halifax), 26 episodes shot on location in p.e.i. with master chef Michael Smith; Mrs. Greenthumbs (Salter Street Films, Halifax), 26 episodes of gardening tips with tv personality and gardening expert Cassandra Danz; The Tourist (Big Schtick Productions, Edmonton), a 13-episode trek around the world from travel tipster and stand-up comic Rick Bronson; Trendspotting (PRAM Productions, Montreal), a 13-episode program on design, fashion, lifestyle and travel.
Also in the lineup are Weird Homes (Yaletown Productions, Vancouver), 13 episodes of the most unusual North American homes hosted by CBC Radio’s Arthur Black; Wild by Nature (Sound Venture Productions, Ottawa), a 13-episode show with Michael Runtz as he visits favorite natural habitats and unique elements of Canadian wildlife; and Inferno! (Great North, Edmonton), a 13 half-hour doc series about fire and its impact on Canada.
Atlantis also announced that it has signed an agreement with Telemedia Communications to broadcast 130 new and exclusive half-hour episodes of Canadian Living Television (working title). The series will air Monday through Friday on Life during the ’98/99 season. Targeted at women aged 25 to 54, Canadian Living Television will draw on the resources of Telemedia’s magazine Canadian Living. The show debuts on Monday, Sept. 21 at noon.
Life will air 80% Canadian content over its broadcast schedule during the 1998/99 season. Barbara Williams, vp programming for Atlantis Broadcasting, says Life has raised the Canadian content by 2.5% every year since its 1995 launch.
Falling into the 20% of non-Canadian programming this season are Robin Leach’s Lifestyles of the Rich and Famous, returning with 65 one hours of updated episodes; Extra, airing daily with 260 episodes; and Outback Adventure (Becker International, l.a.), a 26 half-hour adventure series set in the Australian outback.
Atlantis Broadcasting shifted Life shows Canadian Gardening (AJE Productions, Toronto) and Just Ask Jon Eakes (Toolbox Productions, Toronto) to HGTV.
HGTV will air 17 half-hours of Canadian Gardening and 65 daily half-hours of Just Ask Jon Eakes.
Since its launch, Life has spent nearly $49 million on Canadian programming, including $35 million on original productions. This accounts for about 65% of its total revenue.
HGTV’s season starts Oct. 5, and will air 50% Cancon this season as more than 50% of its annual revenues will go toward Canadian programming the following year.
HGTV has sold 13 episodes each of Garden Architecture (aje), Gardener’s Journal (S&S Productions, Burlington), Savoir Faire (Primevista Television, Toronto) and This Small Space (Film Crew Productions, Regina) to u.s. counterpart HGTV for an average of $10,000 per episode, according to Williams.
