Among the 15 new nfb-produced and coproduced films at the festival are Kathleen Shannon on Film, Feminism & Other Dreams, Gerry Rogers’ documentary portrait of the feminist filmmaking pioneer; Gail Singer’s international doc survey on the phenomenon of abused women, You Can’t Beat A Woman; Chilean director Patricio Guzman’s Chile: la memoria obstinada; Charles Konowal’s Glimmer of Hope; and the Adrienne Amato and Derek Rogers documentary on mental illness, First Break.
The nfb has three highly anticipated animated shorts in official competition: Tali Prevost’s A l’ombre/Under the Weather about an unexpected turn of events one happy day at the beach; Oscar winning Co H’edeman’s Le Jardin d’Ecos/ The Garden of Ecos, an environmental fable; and Louise Johnson’s When the Dust Settles/Et la poussiere retombe, a hilarious and provocative look at the problem of neighbors.
