Telefilm commits $22.2M in first quarter

montreal: In its first quarter Telefilm Canada committed $22,227,711 to 38 new Canadian tv, feature film and multimedia productions. The investment covers the period April 1 to June 30.

From the ctcpf Equity Investment Program (tv), Telefilm has committed almost $10.9 million to 16 English-language projects and $8.3 million to 16 French-language projects.

Selected major investments went to the Atlantis series Traders iii ($5.5 million), Sovicom’s teen fashion drama series Mode (Diva) ($2.75 million), the Forefront teen series Madison v ($1.9 million), Credo/Forefront’s Adventures of Shirley Holmes ii ($1.6 million) and Allegro Film’s children’s series La Courte Echelle ii ($1.5 million).

Receiving less than $1 million were Productions Picoli Librabo et les autres kids’ series Picoli, Librabo et les autres ($900,000), l’Aventure de l’ecriture children’s series l’Aventure de l’ecriture v ($750,000), Breakthrough’s The Adventures of Dudley the Dragon, episodes 52-65 ($700,000), the Sovicom docu-series Des Crimes et des Hommes ii ($597,000), the Synercom Teleproductions docu-series La Culture dans tous ses etats ($544,000), the Aurora Films variety production Journey ($416,500), and the Impex docu-series A la redecouverte du St-Laurent ($250,000).

Telefilm investment via the feature film envelope includes Dirty Productions’ Dirty, director/writer Bruce Sweeney ($779,700) and the Vent d’Est Films feature Aujourd’hui ou jamais, director/writer Jean-Pierre Lefebvre ($525,577). Cooperative de production videoscopique de Montreal’s feature Quiconque meurt, meurt a douleurs from director/writer Robert Morin received $225,492 from the agency’s Feature Film Fund and the Via le Monde (Daniel Bertolino) docu-series Olympica II: Les Jeux d’hiver received an investment of $370,000 from the Commercial Production Fund.

At press time, Telefilm was recording $1.9 million remaining in its English-language television envelope with an oversubscription tally of $20.3 million. The French-language tv envelope is running an oversubscription of $3.7 million with an available balance of $1.2 million.

On the feature film side of the EIP, the English envelope has committed $5.1 million. The available balance is $4.8 million. On the French side, $1.4 million has been allocated with $3.6 million in remaining available funds.
