David Cronenberg’s Crash drew in a healthy $920,000 at the Canadian box office in its first 11 days, generating an average of $21,900 on 42 screens.
Grossing $400,000 in its first three days, the Alliance Communications film rang up $57,961 alone at Toronto’s Uptown Theatre, making it the largest box office of any North American theater that weekend. Alliance says the opening weekend figures out-gross the total box office of any Canadian film released this year.
Sources in the u.s. have pegged bmg, Metro Tartan and Film Four Distribution as bidding for u.k. rights to Crash, but there’s no confirmation of a deal with either company from Alliance. The u.k. is one of the few territories still without representation.
Crash has seven nominations for this year’s Genie Awards including best picture, achievement in direction and achievement in cinematography.
