Quebec director Denis Langlois’ L’escorte had an encouraging opening weekend in Montreal, with a Sept. 27 debut on two screens. Langlois’ feature, his first, has the distinction of being the first Quebec film to open simultaneously in the original French and a subtitled English version.

‘It did very well,’ says Daniel Bouchard of Cinema Libre, Montreal, the film’s distributor. At press time, Bouchard said he expected a good showing mid-week and another strong weekend, particularly for the French screen.

The English subtitled version did $1,052 at the box office on Friday, Saturday and Sunday, enough to keep it in the theater for another weekend. The French-language version, playing in a larger theater, totaled $5,600 for the three days.

Cinema Libre hopes the film’s performance in Montreal will build interest for subsequent releases in Quebec City, Sherbrooke and Trois-Rivieres.
