Journal: Six join in test

The Personal News Network (PNN) Alliance, consisting of Bell Canada, the cbc, Telesat Canada, Ottawa-based Newbridge Networks Corporation, Televitesse Systems in Kanata, Ont. and Oracle of Redwood Shores, California, will bring news and information to desktop computers using Televitesse Systems’ access tv software to monitor tv broadcasts for items that match the identified interests of users.

In the first phase of the pilot project, CBC Newsworld will be delivered using Telesat’s satellite delivery or via Bell’s high-speed atm wan. News-on-demand capabilities will be added in the second phase of the pilot, during which the cbc will also incorporate into its signal extended content data, allowing more sophisticated news searches.

The service is expected to be made available commercially by year’s end.
