Technical services, permanent staff, regional allocation of funds and department structures are going to undergo major changes at the National Film Board if chairperson Sandra Macdonald’s proposal, The NFB in the Year 2000, is approved by the board of trustess in mid-March. In announcements to staff and to members of the press Feb. 12, Macdonald outlined a document which suggests, among other things, switching the nfb’s production format to tape (except where animation is concerned), replacing all permanent filmmaker contracts with three to five-year contracts, a significant reduction in the lab services at Montreal headquarters and maintenance of the current production level at 85 titles (the 1994/95 fiscal total), all despite a cut of about $20 million. Macdonald also proposes administration and non-production costs be cut in half. Also awaiting approval are staff lay-offs amounting to about 150 jobs in the next two years.
