Malofilm recruits as revenues jump to $39M

Montreal: Malofilm Communications has rung up revenues of $38.9 million for the year ending Sept. 30, 1995, a 25% hike over ’94. With fresh financial results in hand, Rene Malo, chairman and ceo, has also made a number of senior appointments to newly created posts.

Stephen Takacsy, vp finance, has been promoted to senior vp and chief financial officer. Andre Goyer, a former partner at the entertainment law firm of Guy & Gilbert, joins the company as vp business and legal affairs and corporate secretary, while Marie-Christine Dufour, who held a senior regulatory affairs position with Astral Communications and has worked with former federal ministers Perrin Beatty, now cbc president, and Marcel Masse, has been named vp public affairs and development.

Dufour says she’ll co-ordinate the company’s various production activities as well as handle regulatory and government issues.

Andre Beraud, who has experience on various abc-tv programs (Lois and Clark, Coach, Family Matters), has been hired as director of development for Malofilm Productions. Former Aska Films Distribution director Luc Dery is the new director of theatrical distribution for Quebec. Dery will also co-ordinate tv sales in Canada. And Alain Bourdeau has been named co-ordinator, multimedia sales, also with Malofilm Distribution.

Gross profits for Malofilm in ’95 jumped smartly by 33% to $10.5 million, up from $7.9 million last year. Net earnings were up 20% to $2.3 million.

Distribution highlights in ’95 at Malofilm include renewed agreements with Republic Pictures, Norstar Releasing, The Samuel Goldwyn Company and Trimark Pictures. New output agreements were signed with Saban International, Time-Life Video and Hallmark Entertainment. Library titles now stand at over 7,000, up more than 15% over ’94.

The company returned to active production in ’95 with its first tv series, Mighty Machines, while Malo executive produced two features, Frankenstein and Me and the hd sci-fi movie Habitat.

Malofilm raised $13.2 million in a new public offering that closed in October, and followed suit by acquiring Desclez Productions, a children’s tv program producer, and Total Internet, a Montreal isp operation.

Malofilm’s annual shareholders meeting is scheduled for March 20 in Montreal.
