– Wendy MacKeigan, chairperson of the Foundation to Underwrite New Drama, has announced increased per project funding amounts available in fund’s Script Development Program. Maximum project funding has doubled from $25,000 to $50,000 and the amount available for the treatment stage has increased to $12,000. A first draft script is now eligible for up to $18,000, a second draft for up to $12,000, and a final draft for up to $8,000.
In addition, fund has come on board as a financing partner in the Shaftesbury Films/Greenpoint feature Swann by making an equity investment in the film. This is the second time fund has supported a Christina Jennings project, the first being Camilla. Swann, a Canada/u.k. coproduction, will be distributed in Canada by Norstar Entertainment and internationally by Majestic Films International.
– Nelvana Tech, a subsidiary of Nelvana Limited, has entered into an agreement with CST Featurizations to create The Attack of the Killer B Movies, a television series for global distribution outside the u.s. cst will distribute in the States.
cst’s ‘featurization’ process transforms classic science-fiction, fantasy and horror movies into smaller half-hour programs by re-editing, rescoring and colorizing. Nelvana is initially acquiring eight colorized episodes of the series for delivery in 1995, with an option to acquire additional featurized episodes in 1996.
Meanwhile, Nelvana Enterprises has licensed Jim Lee’s WildC.A.T.s Covert Action Teams to USA Network. usa has acquired 13 episodes of the animated children’s series for broadcast on Saturday and Sunday mornings. The series is based on Jim Lee and Brandon Choi’s Image Comics comic book series.
– Quebec Superior Court has ordered Television Quatre Saisons to pay $791,000 to Films Rozon for not honoring a broadcast contract for programs originating at the 1990 Just For Laughs Festival.
The deal goes back to mid-1990 when tqs and Rozon signed an agreement to broadcast seven shows from the festival. The judgment says tqs acted in bad faith when it unilaterally withdrew from the agreement, citing financial difficulties. Rozon later sold the show to Radio-Canada.
– Cambium Releasing has sold 65 episodes of The Time of Your Life to the Nostalgia channel in the u.s. and placed Christopher the Christmas Tree and Nilus the Sandman – The First Day in syndication through Seagull Entertainment.
As well, the company recently added 50 episodes of the human rights magazine series Rights & Wrongs to its catalogue. Produced by New York-based Globalvision, the series is currently airing on pbs.
