on the West Coast, Scott Barrett and Mark Masterson of Vancouver’s Under The Gun Films have been busy producing and directing a 30-second spot for the nba’s Vancouver Grizzlies and the nhl’s Vancouver Canucks through Palmer Jarvis and Glennie Stamnes.
The spot features a businessman facing the dilemma of whether to buy season tickets for the Grizzlies or the Canucks. He has a devil on each shoulder – one with a basketball and one with a hockey stick. The dop was Brian Pearson and special effects were supplied by Thomas Special Effects. Steve Barrett edited the spot at Post Haste.
Following on the success of their spots for Converse, Danny Antonucci’s a.k.a. Cartoon inc. will be producing two 30-second and two 15-second promos for ESPN 2 through Oregon’s Wieden & Kennedy. The promos will introduce the college football season with Uncle J and Plunket, two characters created by Antonucci.
At The Ace Film Company, director/dop T.C. Christensen has completed shooting three 30-second spots for the B.C. Lottery Corporation out of Bryant Fulton Shee.
Ace director Gordon Carson shot some talented cows who star in three 30s for the pne fair. The two-day shoot was out of Palmer Jarvis. Carson has another two days on a 30-second spot for the Future Shop through Greg Rodgers Creative. Director Allan Jones also has a day on a 30 in the Future Shop pool, and he’s shooting five days for Certified General Accountants of b.c. out of Myron Balagno and Associates.
In Toronto, director Steve Vaughn and dop Curtis Clarke of Avion Films did a prelight and two-day shoot for L’Oreal through McCann New York. Ryan McMaster directed and lensed a day for Johnson & Johnson through ddb. Dan Hackett, with dop Stanley Mestel, directed seven days for Canadian Tire’s Christmas campaign through Doner Schur Peppler. Barry Farrell of Smash was the editor.
Mestel was the director/dop on a four-day shoot for B.C. Telephone through Lee Liu Tong, and son Simon Mestel directed and lensed a day for Chrysler through bbdo.
This week, George Morita will direct and shoot a day for Always through dmb&b, and Ray Dillman, with Simon Mestel behind the camera, will shoot two days for the same client.
Charles Carson of Imported Artists directed three days for Beaver Lumber. James Gardner was the dop and the agency was Ben Simon Burns.
At Damast Gordon and Associates, director Boris Damast and dop Steve Fierberg shot two days for Old Country Buffet through H&L Advertising, and two days for the Florida Lottery through Earle Palmer Brown. Donald Corsiglia edited the Old Country spots and Steve Scheriber was the editor for the Florida Lottery spots.
Director/cameraman Henry Less of The Players Film Company picked up two days for Nescafe and McCann Erickson, Puerto Rico. Tom Ryan directed and lensed two spots for Ritz out of JWT Mexico, while Tom De Nolf out of Dallas picked up a day for an undisclosed McCain product through BWS Advertising.
And David McNally shot four days for Procter and Gamble’s Pantene through Grey Daiko Tokyo. It’s the first time the agency has come to Canada.
Peter Goldschmidt of Radke Films shot six days for McGraw Hill, with John Stanier the dop. The agency was Margeotes/Fertitta and Partners. Director Jeff Jones and dop Jan Kiesser spent two days in-studio on a spot for Liberty Health through The Ongoing Partnership. Brant Lambermont of Partners’ Post was the editor.
John Mastromonaco and dop Robin Miller spent two days on a shoot for Mastercard through Communique. The editor was Richard Unruh at Third Floor Editing.
Chaos International has just produced a spot with director Ali Selim for Winners and Gee Jeffery and Partners. dop was Doug Koch and editing was handled by Denis Takacs at Smash.
At Dalton Films, David Straiton and dop Barry Parrell are shooting a spot for Bell Mobility through Cossette, and Randy MacDonald is shooting two days for Tip Top through Padulo.
And finally, director Derek Case of Magic Inc. teamed with cameraman Chris Berry on a day for a cross-promotion between Hewlett Packard and p&g. The pair also shot a day for Ocean Spray ‘Fruit Waves’ through J. Walter Thompson.
In Montreal, spot production heats up considerably in early August. We’ll know more about this action later in the month, but for the time being, S.W.A.T Films reports four days of shooting on more Bell Canada long-distance promotions out of Cossette. Alain DesRoches directed, with dop Richard Laniel on board. Studio Marko handled sound and Buzz posted.
Director Bernard Nadeau and Laniel teamed on a one-day shoot for Hotel des Gouverneurs and agency Martel et Cie, with Sonolab and Centre de montage electronique in on the sound and picture post.
Sylvain Caron directed and Stephane Ricard handled camera on three 15s shot direct for client Super Club Videotron. swat also handled an in-post/product promo for Pharmacies Jean Coutu and agency Natcom.
At Jet Films, new action includes five spots for agency Bos and Sports Experts as well as a French 30 for Arctic Power and agency Auger Babeux fcb. Lewis Roth directed and lit the action and Supersuite handled post.
Jet producer Jacques Langlois also reports the house is partnering with l.a.’s Propaganda Films on a commercial/workout video for producer/supermodel Claudia Schiffer. Greg Gold and Christian Langlois are directing at the super-secret location.
Figaro Films reports busy director Claude Brie and dop J.P. Trudel were out on the farm for a one-day French 30 shoot for Loto-Quebec’s scratch-n-win ticket Poule aux oeufs d’Or, out of agency Cossette. Brie and director Martin Ouellette and Trudel handled the action for teen/rock radio station ckoi-fm and its top-rated drive-in morning show, Ye trop de bonne heure.
And finally at Cinelande, Hollywood-based director Yves Simoneau and dop Daniel Jobin helmed the action on the hugely successful 12-day studio/location Grand-Nord choose-the-ending launch for Brasserie Molson O’Keefe and agency Cossette. Creation Montage did the off-line and Hybride Technologies did the f/x and post.
Director Jean-Marc Piche and dop Bruce Chun shot a Yellow shoe fall collection commercial pool for Thrill Communication, while Piche and dop Pierre Gill teamed on a Pizza Hut spot starring sketch comic Marie-Lise Pilote. The one-day shoot is out of Auger Babeux fcb, with cme assigned the on-line edit and transfer.
