New Genies go

behind scenes

This year’s televised Genie Awards will be dramatically different from past shows. The plan is to simulcast a new program on cbc and Radio-Canada which focuses on a behind-the-scenes look at the Canadian film industry.

‘Each show will address their markets with clips, interviews – what is of interest to the public and what will encourage the public to see the films,’ says Academy of Canadian Cinema and Television head Maria Topalovich.

The awards show will run earlier in the day, off-air, and the public will see a program comprised of clips about the nominees and clips of the winners from the awards ceremony. The ceremony may also be aired on a specialty channel a couple of days later.

‘It is a concept that will really market and promote who the makers and talent are,’ says Topalovich.

The tv awards, the Gemeaux and the Geminis, could also see change this year, with the off-air awards broadcast on a specialty channel a few days after the show. PC
