Nouveau festival gets a boost

Montreal: The newly named Montreal International Nouveau Festival of Cinema, Video and New Technology not only has a new wolf logo and an impressive industry advisory committee, it’s also received confirmation of funding from sodec, Telefilm Canada and Service de la Culture de la Ville de Montreal.

‘The funding decision follows a year of negotiations,’ says festival director Claude Chamberlan, who plans to announce the 1995 programming and sponsorship lineup for the June 8-18 event at a press conference May 30.

The funding also represents an important vote of confidence in the 24-year-old festival, which has been shrouded in controversy and legal claims since last spring when Chamberlan moved the dates from October to early June. Former codirector Dimitri Eipides quit the organization, saying he was not consulted about the date change, and later launched a legal challenge against Chamberlan.

In other news from the Nouveau Festival, Patricia Rozema’s latest film, When Night is Falling, starring Pascale Bussieres and Rachael Crawford has been chosen as the opening night film. The Alliance Communications-sponsored gala screening will take place at the refurbished Monument National.

The festival’s new advisory committee is made up of veteran producer Andre Lamy, producer Lorraine Richard, bank executive Danielle St-Denis, filmmaker Francois Girard and lawyer Julie Bergeron.
