Big Blue spot for Heslip, Pienaar

At The Partners’ Film Company, director Dale Heslip and dop Andre Pienaar recently completed a project for Labatt, ‘Big Blue Inning.’ The spot, through Proteus, was posted by Bruce Copeman.

Jim Manera was in town for three and a half days to direct a spot for Pert Plus out of Leo Burnett. Pienaar was cameraman and Andy Ames edited.

Partners’ George Willis recently shot and directed a spot for Young and Rubicam’s Crush, with James Taylor handling post. George Morita was director/dop on an Arm and Hammer assignment out of McKim Baker Lovick/bbdo, Toronto. Brant Lambermont posted the spot.

Also at Partners’, Bronwen Hughes picked up two days for a Black’s Photography campaign out of Padulo. James Gardner was dop and Lambermont posted.

Derek Van Lint and Associates’ David Storey went on loan to Halifax-based Charles Bishop Productions and picked up three days directing a spot for Maritime Telephone and Telegraph. The spot, shot by Barry Peterson and edited by Richard Unruh, was through mbl/bbdo, Vancouver.

Damast Gordon and Associates’ Steve Gordon has finished shooting and directing three commercials for McDonald’s. Two of the spots, out of Cossette Communication-Marketing, were posted by Andy Attalai, and the third, out of Vickers and Benson, was posted by Gillian McCarthy.

On the Western front, ACE Film Company director/dop Allen Jones shot four days on a pool of six 15s for Island Farms Dairies. The spots feature kids talking about their favorite dairy products. The job is out of Copeland Communications, Victoria, b.c.

Wade Ferley of Circle Productions picked up two days as director/dop for BC Tel. The job was through mbl/bbdo, Vancouver. Also at Circle, Stephen Yeates wrapped up two days in Vancouver for Kruggerand. The spot, from Ally and Gargano, New York, was shot by the busy Gardner.

Peter Woeste of Cactus Productions directed a spot for B.C. Tel out of mbl/bbdo, Vancouver.

In Montreal, Cinelande reports new shoots for amusement park La Ronde and amarc and Culinar’s Joe Louis cakes. Erik Canuel directed three 15s for La Ronde and agency Groupe Everest in studio at Cinelande, with dop Pierre Gill. The Joe Louis assignment went to Radke Films director Wayne Gibson. This 30-second English-track spot, out of Cossette, features gallows humor and the new ‘heavy on the cream’ Joe Louis. Peter Hartmann was the cinematographer.

Canuel and Gill were the team behind a new French-market promo for The Flintstones, a family feature film tie-in with McDonald’s Restaurants. The two-day shoot, out of Cossette, produced two 30s for tv and a 45-second spot for theaters.

The Quebec a cappella group Bande Magnetik stars in The Flintstones promo, which includes Happy Meals, t-shirts, six collectible cups – all at RocDonald’s, the first Stone Age fast-food restaurant, which, you guessed it, is featured in the film. The 45-second spot is McDonald’s first-ever production for Quebec theaters. Last year, the chain backed the theatrical release of Jurassic Park and the Quebec feature Matusalem.

At La Fabrique d’Images, commercial action includes a new pool for Banque de Montreal, and spots for L’Oreal and Mikes.

The Banque de Montreal pool, four French 30s out of Publicite Martin called ‘Profils/Project it,’ is a promotion aimed at small business. Martin creative vice-president Richard Leclerc directed three campaign testimonials while Jim Donovan directed the introductory message. The father and son team of Michel and Sylvain Brault teamed up behind the camera on this big four-day shoot.

Marc S. Grenier directed ‘Alfred pleure,’ a new French/ English 30 featuring a cry-baby chef,for Mikes and agency Prisme Communications. Ginette D’Amico handled casting on the two-day mid-May shoot. Steve Danyluk was the dop. Buzz did the post, Air Tango did the sound and music, AstralTech handled lab duties and Supersuite did the film-to-tape transfer.

Grenier also shot ‘Stairs I,’ a French/English 30 for L’Oreal’s Preference-Excellence hair coloring. David Franco was the dop on this two-day shoot out of agency Marketel.

Productions Pascal Blais reports new animation for Place Ste-Foy – two puppet animation French 15s from director Anthony LaMolinara. Blais director Denis Roy also made a contribution on the Joe Louis spot mentioned earlier.

Figaro Films’ Glenn Bydwell was the director and cinematographer on two French 25s for Molson Export and agency Auger Babeux FCB/Publicis. ‘Sac de golf’ and ‘Clou’ were shot over two days and posted at Supersuite.

And at Jet Films, new action includes a French 30 for Loto-Quebec’s Millionnaire, a June bonus prize promotion out of Publicite Tam Tam, and a big one-day exterior shoot for La Brasserie Molson O’Keefe’s O’Keefe.

Alastair Paton directed and Brian Thomson was the dop on the Loto date, and veteran director Lewis Roth will helm the action on the O’Keefe assignment.

One final note: the Sport Select Lottery spot reported in the last issue of Commercial Directions was from Parallel Strategy, Calgary. Circle’s Fred Frame directed and Phil Linzey handled camera.
