Production has begun on the second season of Temple Street Productions’ clone thriller Orphan Black for Space and BBC America.

The sci-fi series had the highest original premiere ever for Space, according to Bell Media, with an average audience of 513,000 viewers for the episode. The show ended its first season with an average audience of 328,000.

In May, BBC Three in the U.K. announced that it had picked up the series, which in August also began an encore run on Bell Media’s conventional channel CTV.

Canuck actress Tatiana Maslany, who so far has portrayed seven characters on the series, nabbed both a Critics’ Choice Television Award and Television Critics Association Award for her lead role on the one-hour drama.

Created by Graeme Manson and John Fawcett, the series is focuses on a young woman who discovers she is a clone, and sets out to uncover the truth about her origins in a web of conspiracy and murder.

Along with Maslany, Orphan Black stars Jordan Gavaris, Maria Doyle Kennedy, Dylan Bruce, Kevin Hanchard and Michael Mando and Skyler Wexler.

The series is exec produced by co-creators Manson and Fawcett and Temple Street’s Ivan Schneeberg and David Fortier. Manson is also writer and Fawcett is director. Orphan Black is distributed internationally by BBC Worldwide.

Orphan Black is shooting its 10-episode second season on location and in studio in Toronto until February 2014.
