EyeSteelFilm has again left the IDFA on a high note, taking the doc festival’s audience prize for RiP: A remix manifesto. The feature doc — a rallying cry on behalf of artists against restrictive copyright laws — was one of seven films honored at the end of the Amsterdam festival.
The prize comes with 5,000 Euros — ‘a perfect end to a crazy week,’ according to a statement from producer Mila Aung-Thwin. The film is a coproduction with the National Film Board, directed by Brett Gaylor. It debuted to cheers earlier this fall at Montreal’s Festival du Nouveau Cinéma, taking the special jury prize, and will play this week at the Whistler festival.
EyeSteel, which is based in Montreal, had a warm reception at last year’s IDFA as well, on the strength of Up the Yangtze. Aung-Thwin was also one of that film’s producers. Up the Yangtze was on Tuesday nominated for a Spirit Award in the documentary category.
