With thousands of Red One cameras in shooters’ hands now, excitement is mounting for two new models set for release in 2009. Here’s a look at what to expect from the new Reds on the way.
The Scarlet
Slated for release in 2009, the Scarlet was unveiled at NAB 2008 after months of speculation. This smaller model features a 2/3-inch Mysterium sensor that can deliver 3K resolution. Again, the price point is shockingly low – it’s expected to come in at US$3,000. One could consider it the ‘prosumer’ Red model; at that price point, its range of appeal extends to hobbyists and amateur filmmakers as well as those wanting to bulk up their Red arsenal for pro shoots.
The Epic
Also introduced at NAB ’08, the Epic is being billed by Red as ‘the result of what we have learned building the Red One.’ The Epic ups the resolution ante to 5K, 6K, 9K and up to 28K, thanks to a new upgraded Mysterium sensor. Current plans are to house the camera in a lighter body, ‘at about four pounds,’ says Red’s Ted Schilowitz.
And if you already plunked down bucks for the Red One but want to upgrade, have no fear – as part of its plan to ‘make obsolescence obsolete,’ Red will offer Red One owners a 100% credit towards buying an Epic.
