Jennifer Baichwal’s latest will open this year’s Hot Docs festival, which will bow on April 30 with her feature Act of God, organizers announced Thursday.
It will mark the world premiere of the film, a meditation on the significance of being struck by lightning. It is produced by Baichwal, Nick de Pencier and Daniel Iron.
‘It’s an honour and a pleasure to launch Hot Docs with a captivating, intelligent work,’ said Hot Docs director of programming Sean Farnel in a release. ‘Jennifer Baichwal’s own artistry continues its steady, sure advance.’
Baichwal (Manufactured Landscapes) is no stranger to the Toronto doc festival. She was the focus of a retrospective last year and previously brought her films The Holier It Gets and Let It Come Down: The Life of Paul Bowles, which won an International Emmy in 1998.
Act of God was one of the first projects to draw money from the new Canwest/Hot Docs Funds. It is due in theaters on May 1 through Mongrel Media.
