Slings & Arrows from Sao Paulo

Brazil’s TV Globo is set to air its own version of Slings & Arrows, from Fernando Meirelles.

The acclaimed Brazilian director is currently in post-production on a Portuguese-language version of the Canuck series, having optioned the format rights from Toronto’s Rhombus Media last year.

The series, called Som e Fúria (Sound & Fury), wrapped shooting on 12 episodes last October in Meirelles’ hometown of Sao Paulo, where his production company O2 Filmes is based. A spokesperson for the director says the show is scheduled to air in June or July on TV Globo, Brazil’s largest network.

Meirelles (City of God) and Rhombus producer Niv Fichman collaborated on the $30-million Canada/Brazil/Japan copro Blindness in 2007, which opened the Cannes film festival and premiered at TIFF a year later. Fichman reportedly sent Meirelles the first season of Slings during preproduction on Blindness.

The critically well-received Slings, a comedy about a dysfunctional Shakespearean theater troupe, aired three seasons on The Movie Network/Movie Central and Showcase. It stars Paul Gross, Martha Burns, Don McKellar and Mark McKinney.
