Resident Evil: Retribution wins Golden Reel Award

Resident Evil: Retribution, which grossed more than $5.4 million in Canada in 2012, has won the 2012 Cineplex Golden Reel Award, the Academy for Canadian Cinema and Television announced Tuesday.

“Resident Evil: Retribution has surpassed the success of the previous Resident Evil franchise outings,” said ACCT CEO Helga Stephenson in a statement.

The 3D film is written and directed by Paul W. S. Anderson and produced by Don Carmody, marking Carmody’s seventh time producing a Golden Reel award-winning film.

Resident Evil: Retribution has grossed approximately $250 million worldwide. The franchise has grossed more than $930 million at the global box office.

The Golden Reel award is presented each year to the Canadian film that earns the highest domestic box office of that year.

Previous installments of the Resident Evil franchise, 2004’s Resident Evil: Apocalypse and 2010’s Resident Evil: Afterlife, have also won Golden Reel awards.

Entertainment One’s Alliance team has distributed all five films in the series.

Last year’s winner was Ken Scott’s Starbuck, which grossed more than $3.5 million in Canada in 2011.

The Golden Reel award will be presented at the inaugural Canadian Screen Awards on March 3.
