Indie producer Virginia Thompson (Corner Gas) and writer/director Robert de Lint founded Vérité Films in Regina 15 years ago when Saskatchewan introduced its film tax credit.

Now the couple are picking up stakes and moving their headquarters to Toronto as the province replaces its refundable tax break for local film and TV shoots with non-refundable tax credit considered unworkable by local producers.

“Our future is in Toronto now, where our projects can be financed,” Thompson said Wednesday in a statement, ahead of the province’s refundable tax credit ending on June 30.

She added the relocation to Toronto, where Vérité Films projects can be financed, will affect around 600 local technicians, artists, crew, digital media and support staff hired to work on her TV series.

Vérité Films’ announcement comes after Regina-based Partners in Motion said it will relocate out of the province, likely to Toronto or Vancouver.

Thompson and de Lint will maintain a satellite office in Regina in the hope Saskatchewan will one day reintroduce a refundable film tax credit.
