Endemol picks up global format rights for Canada Sings

Global producer/distributor Endemol has picked up the worldwide format rights  for the Shaw Media singing competition series Canada Sings.

The series, which airs on Shaw’s Global Television in Canada, is produced by  Toronto-based Insight Productions Ltd., which created and owns the format. Shaw  Media announced  last week that Canada Sings would be picked up at home  for a second season.

The series transforms work colleagues into singing and dancing groups that  compete against other companies for a weekly cash prize of CDN$10,000 that goes  to the winners’ charity of choice. The teams are aided in their quest by top  choreographers and vocal coaches.

“This is an unabashed feel good format packed with adrenalin, bravado,  teamwork, courage and jeopardy,” said Grant Ross, global head of format  acquisitions at Endemol. “The show’s performance in Canada speaks for itself and  the elements that have driven that success can be translated in any territory.  We’re delighted to be in business with Insight and very much look forward to  taking their format to the market internationally.”

“We are thrilled to be partnering with Endemol on Canada Sings,” added Jane Rimer, head of international creative and business development for  Insight Productions. “This fresh format mixes charity and performance in a  unique and very heartfelt way, giving new meaning to the term ‘everyday hero.’ We are very excited to see what each country’s local talent can do and are  pleased to bring another Insight Productions Format to the world stage.”

In other news, reports emerged Monday that Endemol had rejected Time  Warner’s takeover bid for the company. Thus far, no official comment on the  matter has come from either party.
