Corus greenlights its first original scripted spinoff

EXCLUSIVE: The series, Private Eyes West Coast, will see Jason Priestley and Cindy Sampson reprise their original roles from Private Eyes.

Corus Entertainment’s Global has greenlit a Private Eyes spinoff produced by Toronto-based Lionsgate Canada and Toronto and L.A.-based Piller/Segan.

The series, Private Eyes West Coast, will see Jason Priestley and Cindy Sampson reprise their private investigator roles from the five-season, Toronto-set Global original that aired from 2016 to 2021.

The spinoff will feature Priestley and Sampson’s characters leading surprisingly different lives across the country in Victoria, B.C. with new friends and a fresh set of supporting characters.

Corus Entertainment is the commissioning broadcaster, with Rachel Nelson, VP, of original programming and head of Corus Studios, and Lynne Carter, director, original programming overseeing the production. Lionsgate Television will distribute the series internationally and handle international sales.

“This marks the first time Corus has greenlit a spinoff of one of our homegrown scripted series,” said Nelson in a statement. “Private Eyes resonated so deeply with viewers at home and abroad, and alongside our valued production partners, we’re so excited to see Shade and Angie now on the beautiful coast of British Columbia.”

Additional information, such as the start of production, casting, producers and further story details, will be announced at a later date, according to a Corus Entertainment representative.

Entertainment One (eOne), acquired by Lionsgate in 2023 and subsequently rebranded as Lionsgate Canada in 2024, in association with Corus Entertainment produced the original Private Eyes series. The Aug. 26, 2021 series finale, according to data from Numeris, attracted 1.4 million viewers and was the most-viewed program in Canada that week.

“With the global success of the first series, a spinoff seemed like the natural next step,” said Jocelyn Hamilton, president, television, Lionsgate Canada. “We can’t wait to reveal the surprises we have in store for audiences.”
