The Aboriginal Peoples Television Network (APTN) has greenlit the docuseries Horse Warriors, which will debut on for Sept. 2.
The series hails from Alberta filmmakers Dominique Keller and Neil Grahn and follows Indigenous relay racers as they “train, compete and strive for victory on the Indian relay circuit,” according to a news release. The duo previously produced the 2022 APTN series Rodeo Nation.
The 13 x 30-minutes series tracks three teams competing in events across Turtle Island, including the Enoch Gold Cup and the Calgary Stampede. Relay racing sees a rider jump from horse to horse during a three-lap race, without the use of a saddle.
Keller and Grahn also produce and executive produce the series under their Yarrow Pictures banner. The two wrote and directed on the series, with Kevin Littlelight also directing. Additional writers are Helen Metella, Neil Flemming, Conni Massing and Weyme Teeter.
“Relay Racing allows us to experience, today, the centuries-old, warrior spirit of Turtle Island’s plains peoples,” said Grahn in a statement.
Horse Warriors was developed and produced with the assistance of the Canada Media Fund, the Government of Alberta, federal tax credits, the Rogers Telefund and APTN.
