CBC Gem original to premiere at Tribeca festival

I Hate People, People Hate Me has been selected in Tribeca's Now section for indie episodic series.

CBC Gem original series I Hate People, People Hate Me is headed to the 2023 Tribeca Festival.

The short-form comedy has been selected as part of the festival’s Now section for indie episodic series. It was created by Bobbi Summers, who also stars in the series and serves as producer, with Blake Mawson as director.

I Hate People, People Hate Me follows two “underdog” 20-somethings as they navigate life in Toronto’s queer community. It also stars Lily Kazimiera.

Additional producers are Palmer Baranek and Jeff So, while executive producers are LoCo Motion Pictures president Lauren Corber, Evan Dell’Aquila and Lisa Filipelli.

The series received financial support from the Independent Production Fund’s (IPF) and Canada Media Fund’s Development Packaging Program, as well as IPF’s Short Form Series Production Program. It also received production support from the Bell Fund and Ontario Creates.

I Hate People, People Hate Me was filmed in and around Toronto earlier this year, Corber tells Playback Daily. Canadian singer Bif Naked also appears in the series in a guest role. The series does not have a distributor as of press time.

Tribeca announced its film lineup earlier this week, with five Canadian titles among the world premieres, including Pier-Philippe Chevigny’s Richelieu, which was selected for the International Narrative Competition. The festival runs from June 7 to 18.
