eOne takes international rights to Diggstown

Showrunner Floyd Kane's upcoming legal drama starring Vinessa Antoine will premiere on CBC in winter 2019.

eOne has acquired the international TV rights to CBC’s upcoming original drama Diggstown (6 x 60 minutes).

Created by exec producer and showrunner Floyd Kane (Across the Line), the legal drama follows Marcie Diggs (played by Vinessa Antoine, pictured), a star lawyer who lands at a legal aid office in Dartmouth, NS following a family tragedy.

The Toronto-headquartered company will handle distribution in markets outside of English-speaking Canada and introduce it to buyers at MIPCOM next month. eOne’s Noel Hedges, EVP, acquisitions, international distribution, brokered the deal.

The series was first introduced at CBC’s 2018/19 Upfront, where the pubcaster announced it would be the first Canadian original drama to feature a black Canadian female lead character. Production is currently underway on the series in Halifax, with the show set to premiere in late winter 2019.

Diggstown is produced Kane’s Freddie Films shingle with exec producer Amos Adetuyi’s (Jean of the Joneses) Circle Blue Entertainment, and DHX Media. Exec producers include Brenda Greenberg (Being Erica), Todd Berger (Wynonna Earp) and Kelly Makin (Saving Hope), who also served as director on the drama’s pilot.

The project stars Natasha Henstridge (Species), C. David Johnson (Street Legal), Stacey Farber (Grace and Frankie), Brandon Oakes (Arctic Air), Shailene Garnett (Shadowhunters: The Mortal Instruments), Tim Rozon (Wynonna Earp) and Dwain Murphy (Titans).
