TIFF ’18: The Orchard nabs Nguyen’s Hummingbird Project

Produced by Item 7 and Belgium's Belga Productions, the film will get a theatrical release stateside in 2019.

New York-based indie distrib The Orchard has acquired U.S. rights to Kim Nguyen’s The Hummingbird Project.

The Belgium/Canada copro starring Jesse Eisenberg and Alexander Skarsgard is produced by Montreal’s Item 7 and  Belga Productions. It will get a theatrical release in the States in early 2019, as confirmed to Playback Daily by Item 7.

The deal was negotiated between Danielle DiGiacomo, VP of acquisitions for the Orchard, and CAA on behalf of the filmmakers.

Filmed in Quebec in 2017, the film follows two New York City traders who plan to build a fibre-optic cable from Kansas City to New York in an effort to transmit information between stock exchanges more efficiently (and give them a leg up on their competitors).

Item 7′s Pierre Even (Eye on Juliet, War Witch) produced the project, with Brian Kavanaugh-Jones and Fred Berger of L.A.-based Automatik exec producing. Elevation Pictures is distributing the film in Canada, with CAA handling U.S. sales and HanWay Films handling international distribution.
