Syndicado sells 40 hours of content to Popcornflix

The deal between the Toronto-based digital distributor and the U.S. streaming platform includes the culinary series Cake Walk.

cake walk 2U.S. streaming platform Popcornflix has acquired 40 hours of scripted and unscripted content from Toronto-based digital distributor Syndicado.

The deal, inked between Syndicado and Popcornflix’ parent company, New York-based Screen Media Ventures, includes the Comedy Network’s original series Keys to the VIP (13 x 22 minutes), which ran for three seasons between 2006 and 2009, as well as a number of cooking, lifestyle and paranormal series. 

The ad-supported streamer, which is accessible to U.S. audiences through Roku, Amazon Fire TV, Android, iOS, Web, and smart televisions, also acquired two culinary series Cake Walk (13 x 45 minutes, pictured) and Chef School (13 x 22 minutes); wedding series Rich Bride, Poor Bride (26 x 22 minutes); hour-long drama Betrayal (8 x 60 minutes), which originally aired on ABC in 2013; and paranormal series Girly Ghost Hunters (13 x 22 minutes).

Headed up by Greg Rubidge, Syndicado was launched in 2009 as a VOD aggregator for internet and VOD outlets such as Amazon, iTunes, Google, Vudu and Shudder, but in 2014 expanded to include theatrical releasing both Canada and the U.S. Among the pacts inked by the company recently is a TIFF ’14 deal to acquire Canadian rights to a trio of features from writer/director Robert Minervini, Stop the Pounding HeartLow Tide and The Passage. Earlier this year, the company also launched a sales agency, SyndicadoFilm Sales, dedicated to documentaries.
