CTF maxed out

It’s been a busy year so far at the Canadian Television Fund, so much so that applications are no longer being accepted for English-language development support at Telefilm Canada’s offices in the West, Ontario, Nunavut or Quebec.

‘There are more high-quality concepts than there is funding to support them,’ says Karen Franklin, director of Telefilm’s English-language operations. The federal funder – which handles CTF’s Special Initiatives Stream and the development of English-language TV – is still taking applications for regional cash at its Atlantic office in Halifax. The SIS envelope for 2004/05 is $6 million.

Other shows have already been assigned cash through CTF’s broadcaster envelopes, which cover documentary, variety and kids shows. The biggest winners were the second run of CBC’s kids show Poko ($1.6 million) and the debut season of CTV’s Instant Star ($2.4 million). YTV also scored just over $1 million apiece for its 15/Love and Girl stuff/Boy stuff, both going into second seasons, while Family Channel’s new Life with Derek walked off with $980,000.
