CTV plays catchup with Star

The third season of homegrown teen drama Instant Star returns to the CTV primetime schedule Tuesday at 9:30 p.m. ET with the first of 13 new episodes, just one week after wrapping its second season on June 19.

The Epitome Pictures show was bounced around the CTV schedule and aired only half of its second season last summer, before returning with the remaining six last month. Star will move to its regular Sunday 7:30 p.m. timeslot beginning July 8.

Emily Andras took over as showrunner for Shelley Scarrow on season three, which shot in Toronto last fall and features an outdoor concert shot at Dundas Square for episode three and a rooftop concert filmed at nearby Cloud Gardens Park for episode 13. Directors include Jim Donovan (Naked Josh) and veteran TV helmer Graeme Campbell (The Eleventh Hour, Degrassi: TNG).

Storylines this season revolve around Karma (played by Canuck singer/songwriter Cory Lee in her TV acting debut), the latest winner of the Instant Star singing competition, and a rival to original winner Jude (Alexz Johnson). Returning cast members include Tim Rozon as Jude’s producer friend Tommy Q, and Tyler Kyte as lead-guitarist Spiederman.

Following the tradition of past seasons, CTV will again release an original companion CD of Instant Star on July 3. The network will also broadcast episodes of season three the day after their original airdate on its broadband network.

Meanwhile, production is underway on season four of the half-hour drama, which will shoot 13 new episodes in Toronto until November 5.
