Melanie Oates rolls in B.C. on latest feature Stranger in Town

The film follows a woman driven into the secular world after being forced away from her fundamentalist sect.

St. John’s filmmaker Melanie Oates (Sweet Angel Baby) has begun principal photography in B.C. on her latest feature, Stranger in Town.

Amber Ripley, who is producing the film under her Goodbye Productions banner, told Playback Daily that the production is shooting from Oct. 27 to Dec. 6 in locations throughout the province, including Columbia Valley, Maple Ridge and Langley.

Penned by Patrick Whistler (In Cold Light), the film follows a woman who finds herself alone in a secular world that is both alienating and liberating after being driven away from her fundamentalist sect due to an explosion of violence.

Canadians Sophie Nélisse (Yellowjackets) and Sydney Topliffe (Wayward) lead the cast, along with British-Canadian actor Charlie Carrick (The Apprentice).

Stranger in Town is supported by Anamorphic Media alongside Telefilm Canada, and Creative BC. Anamorphic’s Sara Shaak and Whistler are executive producers.

Toronto-based Mongrel Media is handling the film’s Canadian distribution.
