Sumerian Pictures has acquired writer-director Chandler Levack’s (I Like Movies) sophomore feature Mile End Kicks for the U.S.
The New York–based company, an offshoot of the Sumerian Pictures record label, is planning a nationwide theatrical rollout for the hipster comedy, according to a release.
Mile End Kicks takes place in Montreal during the summer of 2011, as a young music critic becomes romantically involved with two bandmates while writing a book on Alanis Morissette’s album Jagged Little Pill.
The film stars Barbie Ferreira (Euphoria) and Stanley Simons (The Iron Claw), alongside Canadian actors Devon Bostick (Oppenheimer), Juliette Gariépy (Deux femmes en or) and Jay Baruchel (BlackBerry). It made its world premiere at this year’s Toronto International Film Festival (TIFF).
Rob Williams, president of content strategy for Sumerian Pictures, negotiated the deal for Mile End Kicks with Pip Ngo, EVP of sales and acquisitions at L.A.-headquartered XYZ Films.
XYZ co-financed the film with Finnish investment firm IPR.VC, and represents global sales rights outside of Canada. Entract Films is releasing the film in Quebec, with Elevation Pictures handling distribution for the rest of Canada.
Mile End Kicks is produced by Matthew Miller for Toronto’s Zapruder Films, Pat Kiely for Montreal’s Banner House Productions, and Julie Groleau. The production was supported by Telefilm Canada, SODEC, Ontario Creates, Crave and CBC Films, in association with Rhombus Media.
