Netflix Canada has commissioned the eight-part series The Granville Girls from Toronto’s Shaftesbury.
The period romance is based on The Gilbert Girls book series from Kentucky-based author Cat Cahill.
The series centres on a woman who works at the Granville Hotel as a “Granville Girl,” but finds herself falling for the mysterious hotel builder, despite the strict rules on fraternizing with men.
Adriana Maggs (Law & Order Toronto: Criminal Intent; pictured right) is attached as the showrunner and writer. Shaftesbury chairman and president Christina Jennings (pictured left) is an executive producer.
“The Granville Girls is a big, blue-sky series that offers the comfort of female friendship and the allure of period romance,” said Danielle Woodrow and Tara Woodbury, Netflix’s directors, content – Canada, in a joint statement. “Between Adriana’s distinctive voice and Christina’s powerhouse producing, we’re confident that audiences are going to be hooked from the first episode.”
Jennings added that the setting of the Rocky Mountains is perfect “for our young women to explore adventure, friendship and romance.”
Netflix Canada has ramped up its originals this year after establishing its local Canadian content team in 2021. One of its early commissions, Wayward, debuted on Sept. 25, and has garnered 27.8 million views as of Oct. 12. North of North, co-commissioned with CBC and APTN, debuted on the streamer on April 10 and saw 8.7 million views and 27 million hours viewed as of June 30.
In addition, an untitled Newfoundland limited series went to camera earlier this year.
