Toronto’s New Metric Media is expanding its comedy ecosystem with the acquisition of Vancouver-based podcast studio Kelly&Kelly.
The acquisition, announced on Monday (Oct. 13), expands and diversifies New Metric’s audio and video comedy offerings while providing additional access points for working with partners and talent. The financial terms were not disclosed.
Co-founded by Chris Kelly and Pat Kelly in 2016, Kelly&Kelly has produced series for partners including CBC, Audible, Warner Music and Sony. It has worked with talent such as actors William H. Macy, Maya Hawke and Anna Faris, and musicians such as Jason Derulo, Ice Spice and Doja Cat.
The company’s co-founders and partners are joining the New Metric team effective Nov. 1, with Kelly&Kelly furthering its focus on video podcasting and unscripted content. The programming will complement content being created by New Metric’s standup and podcast division, which launched at the beginning of this year.
Projects in the works for Kelly&Kelly include a collaboration with SmartLess Media and a six-part series on the “Queen of Canada” supporters for CBC Podcasts. While comedy is the company’s focus, it will continue to produce scripted dramas, unscripted series and documentaries, such as Dirtbag Climbers (Lark Productions) or Broomgate: A Curling Scandal (CBC/USG; pictured).
“New Metric Media is the best-of-the-best when it comes to creating comedy, and joining Mark [Montefiore] and the team is an incredible opportunity for us to scale up production and international distribution,” said Chris Kelly and Pat Kelly in a statement. “Podcasting is evolving, and we’re super-excited to build what’s next.”
The acquisition of Kelly&Kelly continues a busy period for New Metric. Earlier this month, the company unveiled a strategic investment in L.A.’s Good Walk Entertainment, and also started production on I Kill the Bear, its latest series with Letterkenny and Shoresy creator Jared Keeso.
New Metric is showcasing I Kill the Bear, along with its Anthony Q. Farrell-created miniseries Hate the Player: The Ben Johnson Story, in special screenings for buyers at MIPCOM in Cannes, which runs from Oct. 13 to 16.
