Hot Sheet: Jimmy Kimmel Live! tops overall Canadian demand

The late-night talk show surged in demand in late September as it returned to TV following its suspension by ABC.

ABC’s Jimmy Kimmel Live! (pictured) led overall demand in Canada late September following the late-night show’s return to the air.

The talk show, which airs on Citytv in Canada, was 75.3 times more in demand than the average series in Canada during the week of Sept. 22 to 28, according to Parrot Analytics.

Jimmy Kimmel Live! returned to airwaves on Sept. 23 after ABC had suspended the talk show on Sept. 17, following criticism of a Kimmel monologue that touched on MAGA conservatives’ response to Charlie Kirk’s death. Demand for the series jumped following its suspension, and rose further with its reinstatement.

Kimmel’s returning monologue is the show’s most-watched to date, with over 22 million views on the show’s YouTube channel. The monologue which led to Kimmel’s suspension currently has over 4.5 million views.

Comedy Central’s South Park landed at No. 2 overall with a demand average of 50. The series, which streams on Paramount+ in Canada, released the fifth episode of its 27th season on Sept. 24.

Following its series finale on Sept. 17, Prime Video’s The Summer I Turned Pretty remained as the No. 1 digital original, but dropped to No. 4 overall with a demand average of 47.7.

HBO Max’s Peacemaker was No. 2 digitally and No. 9 overall. The comic book-based series held an average of 36.3 as it nears its season two finale on Oct. 9.

Netflix’s crime thriller miniseries Black Rabbit debuted at No. 7 on the Hot Sheet’s digital original chart with an average of 27.2. The series premiered on Netflix on Sept. 18.

Parrot Analytics calculates its Top 10 lists using Demand Expressions, which are shown by using a metric that demonstrates how much more in-demand the top series are than the average TV show (linear, pay TV, SVOD and AVOD) in Canada. For example, a difference of 1x represents the market average and 10x means a series is 10 times more in demand than the average TV show in this market. Demand is defined as the total audience demand being expressed for a title within a market. Audience demand reflects the desire, engagement and viewership, weighted by importance; thus, a stream or download is a higher expression of demand than a “like” or comment.
