Inside Out executive director Elie Chivi to exit festival

EXCLUSIVE: A search committee is now in place to find the 2SLGBTQ+ Toronto festival's next leader.

Elie Chivi is stepping down as executive director of Toronto’s Inside Out Film Festival.

Chivi (pictured) will exit his role at the 2SLGBTQ+ festival on Sept. 29 to relocate to L.A. to pursue another opportunity in the film industry, the festival exclusively told Playback Daily.

A search committee has been formed to find Chivi’s replacement, comprising members of the board, its HR committee members and other advisors. Stakeholders will be kept informed through the transition, with a plan to name a new executive director in the coming months.

Chivi’s departure is the latest in a string of changes at Inside Out in recent years. Chivi was placed at the helm of the festival last November, following the departure of former co-head and executive director Andrew Murphy.

Chivi and Murphy had previously been named co-heads of Inside Out in February 2023, in the wake of Lauren Howes exiting the festival after one year as executive director. Howes had replaced longtime director Andria Wilson in 2021.

“Under Elie’s stewardship, Inside Out has experienced remarkable growth and stability,” said Inside Out board chair Christopher McKenzie in a statement. “He has played a pivotal role in guiding the organization’s strategic direction, expanding revenue streams, and cultivating impactful partnerships with sponsors and funders.

“His leadership was instrumental in the successful execution of Inside Out’s renowned nine-day Toronto festival, a vital platform for celebrating 2SLGBTQ+ storytelling, community and culture. Additionally, Elie launched and developed Inside Out’s flagship fundraising event, Outbid, now entering its third year.”

Chivi added: “I take pride in the achievements we’ve accomplished together and believe that now is the right time to pass the torch to new leadership, who will guide Inside Out into its next chapter. As I embark on a new journey in Los Angeles, I’ll be pursuing opportunities that allow me to continue making a meaningful impact within mission-driven organizations.”
