A ustin, Texas-based Fantastic Fest has revealed the full lineup for its 2025 edition this September, including the world premieres of a number of Canadian films and copros.
Taking Fantastic Fest’s closing-night spot is Whistle (pictured), from The Nun director Corin Hardy, which is coproduced by Toronto- and L.A.-headquartered No Trace Camping (Goon) and Ireland’s Wild Atlantic Pictures.
Starring Dafne Keen (Logan, Deadpool & Wolverine) and Nick Frost (Shaun of the Dead, How to Train Your Dragon), the horror flick centres on a group of misfit high school friends who unleash an ancient evil when they unwisely blow on a cursed Aztec death whistle.
Whistle is produced by David Gross, Jesse Shapira of No Trace Camping and Macdara Kelleher of Wild Atlantic Pictures. Black Bear Pictures is handling international sales. Shudder and the Independent Film Company have acquired U.S. rights to the film.
Also world premiering at Fantastic Fest is the Canada–New Zealand copro Deathgasm II: Goremageddon. Toronto’s Raven Banner Entertainment came on board as Canadian production partner for the belated sequel to the 2015 horror comedy Deathgasm and will be handling world sales and Canadian distribution.
Helmed by returning writer-director Jason Lei Howden, Deathgasm II follows the original film’s metalhead protagonist, portrayed by Milo Cawthorne, as he attempts to raise his departed band members from the dead to win an epic Battle of the Bands. The film was shot last August in Regina, Sask., with domestic funding support from Creative Saskatchewan and the Saskatchewan Film and Video Development Corporation (SaskFilm).
Raven Banner’s Andrew T. Hunt serves as producer on Deathgasm II, along with Nick Garrett and Mark J. Cassidy of Fish Entertainment and Tony Hrynchuk of Fahrenheit Films. The executive producers are Michael Paszt, James Fler and Pasha Patriki of Raven Banner’s production arm Hangar 18 Media, Joshua Viola and Klayton of Bit Bot Media, Michael Vasicek and BJ McDonnell.
B.C.-born filmmaker Avalon Fast, who made her directorial debut with 2022’s Honeycomb, will debut her sophomore outing Camp at Fantastic Fest. The film follows a young woman with a traumatic past who takes a job as a counselor at a summer camp for troubled youth, where she discovers a coven of witches who could potentially show her a path towards healing — or damnation.
Camp is produced by Taylor Nodrick, Jacob Glickman, Jackie De Niverville of Lucent, Peter Kuplowsky of Lowsky Productions and Michael Peterson of Peterson Polaris Corp. Filmoption International is handling sales.
Rounding out the Canadian world premieres at Fantastic Fest is the documentary Silver Screamers, from director Sean Cisterna. The film follows eight senior citizens, ranging in age from 75 to 96, who set out to make their own horror film.
Cisterna serves as a producer on the film through his Mythic Productions shingle, with Ivonete de Sousa coproducing. Judy Gladstone is an executive producer. Toronto’s Blue Ice Docs is on board as a distribution partner.
Fantastic Fest runs in Austin, TX from Sept. 18 to 25.
