TVO unveils women’s soccer doc The Pitch

The all-access doc about the launch of Canada's Northern Super League will make its world premiere next month at the Atlantic International Film Festival.

Ontario pubcaster TVO has revealed its greenlight of The Pitch, an original feature documentary about the creation of Canada’s first professional women’s soccer league.

Directed by award-winning filmmaker and editor Michèle Hozer (Genius Within: The Inner Life of Glenn GouldSugar Coated), The Pitch chronicles retired Olympic soccer star Diana Matheson’s quest to launch the Northern Super League (NSL), the first-ever pro women’s soccer league in Canada.

The film follows Matheson (pictured right) and her NSL partners as they overcome institutional resistance, doubters and naysayers to realize their game-changing dream, culminating in the triumphant launch of the league in April 2025.

As was recently announced, The Pitch will make its world premiere at Halifax’s Atlantic International Film Festival on Sept. 15. Following that, the film will make a nationwide screening tour with the sponsorship of the Canadian Tire Corporation, with community impact screenings scheduled for Calgary (Sept. 24), Vancouver (Oct. 20), Montreal (Oct. 28), Ottawa (Oct. 30), Halifax (Nov. 6) and Toronto (Nov. 12).

The doc will make its broadcast premiere on TVO’s linear and digital platforms on Nov. 9, with additional broadcasts on sports nets TSN and RDS slated for spring 2026.

“I thought I was making a film about building something new. What I came to understand is that this league is a response to everything these women were denied,” said Hozer in a statement. “This is more than a sports story, it’s a story of perseverance, equality, and the people building the future of women’s soccer in Canada.”

The Pitch is presented by TVO and produced in association with the Canada Media Fund, Ontario Creates, Rogers Documentary Fund and the Government of Canada. The producers are Hozer and Bryn Hughes, with Nathalie Cook serving as executive producer.

The film’s national screening tour is presented by Canadian Tire Corporation, along with Canadian Tire Jumpstart Charities (community partner), Canadian Women & Sport (impact partner), Toyota Canada (mobility partner) and Coca-Cola (celebration partner).
