Netflix renews Bet for season two

The manga-adapted series spent three weeks in the streamer's global top 10 after it premiered on May 15.

Netflix is rolling the dice on Bet for a second season.

The 10 x 30-minute series, a live-action adaptation of the Japanese manga Kakegurui written by Homura Kawamoto and illustrated by Toru Naomura, is directed and showrun by Simon Barry (Continuum), who also developed it for television. The series is produced by Toronto-headquartered Boat Rocker Media.

Bet takes place at a boarding school for the global elite where underground gambling determines students’ hierarchy. It follows a newcomer to the school, played by Canadian actor Miku Martineau (Kate), who puts her gambling skills to the test as part of a secret quest for revenge.

Also among the cast are Canadians Eve Edwards (The Bad Orphan), Clara Alexandrova (Danger in the Dorm), Hunter Cardinal (Caution: May Contain Nuts), Anwen O’Driscoll (Burden of Truth), Aviva Mongillo (Workin’ Moms), Laura Afelskie (Painkiller), Dorian Giordano (Thanksgiving), Emma Elle Paterson (The Apprentice), Ryan Sutherland (Four Singles) and Peter Outerbridge (Nikita).

Bet‘s first season debuted on May 15. In its first week it was Netflix’s No. 9 most popular English-language series globally, receiving 2.4 million views. In its second week it received 5 million views, moving it up to No. 4. That week, Bet was a top 10 series in 77 countries, including nations such as Canada, India, South Africa, Australia, Germany, Spain and Italy.

The series remained in the global top 10 for a third week at the end of May, dropping to No. 5 with 2.9 million views.

Executive producers on the first season include Barry, Jeff F. King, David Fortier, Ivan Schneeberg, Jon Rutherford and Nick Nantell.

“I’m extremely happy for our amazing Bet fans from all over the world, who get to enjoy another season, and for this incredible cast and crew to return to St. Dominic’s for more gambling and general madness,” said Barry in a statement.
