Actor Iman Vellani has joined Tamil-Canadian writer-director Maya Bastian’s (pictured right) coming-of-age comedy series How To Be Brown as an executive producer.
The Karachi-born, Markham, Ont.-based Vellani (pictured left) is most known for playing Ms. Marvel in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, most prominently in the Disney+ Ms. Marvel miniseries and the feature The Marvels.
How To Be Brown is in development from Toronto-based 90th Parallel Productions‘ Stuart Henderson and Javiera Quintana, the producing pair behind Crave’s We’re All Gonna Die (Even Jay Baruchel).
Bastian’s semi-autobiographical series follows a brown girl adopted by white liberal parents in the suburbs of fictional Oakton, Ont. who escapes to Toronto with her punk best friend.
“Through a story deeply rooted in its time and place, Maya [Bastian] manages to find emotional truths that transcend generations, weaving humour with a deep understanding of what it means to be lost in your own skin,” said Vellani in a statement. “I’m proud to help bring her vision to life.”
“How To Be Brown is the show I wish I’d had growing up,” said Bastian. “It’s a universal story about trying to fit in and the awkwardness of not knowing where you belong.”
