Wookey Films is marking its first large-scale scripted series with the Winnipeg-set, French-language dramedy Malgré moi for Radio-Canada’s ICI Tou.TV Extra.
The 4 x 60-minute series is produced by the Winnipeg-based company’s co-founders Janelle and Jérémie Wookey (Banni) and directed by Maxime Beauchamp (Fem). It began production on May 20 and wraps on June 20. The series is supported by Radio-Canada and the Canada Media Fund and will premiere on ICI Tou.TV Extra in the 2025-26 broadcast season.
Told through flashbacks on a flight from Winnipeg to Montreal, Malgré moi stars Quebec-based Schelby Jean-Baptiste (Je voudrais qu’on m’efface) as a young woman who dropped everything to chase love, only to be betrayed and seek vengeance alongside two dysfunctional strangers.
The pan-Canadian cast also includes Quebec-based comedian Eddy King (La chute de l’empire américain), Ontario’s Mikaël Conde (Hunting Grounds), and artist Stéphanie Morin Robert and Micheline Marchildon (Edgar), both from Manitoba.
Malgré moi is written by Sophie Bienvenu (Et au pire, on se mariera), who co-wrote the first episode with Édith Kabuya (Basket).
“The talent [in Manitoba] is incredible – we know this show will hold its own alongside what comes out of larger production hubs like Toronto and Montreal,” said Jérémie in a statement. “It’s also moving to hear so much French on set, and filming Winnipeg as Winnipeg lets us showcase just how cool and romantic this city can be.”
