Upfronts ’25: Prime Video tables Canadian unscripted series

Billed as its first-ever Canadian upfronts, the presentation includes Blink49’s two-part docuseries ROMCON: Who The F**k is Jason Porter?

Prime Video’s first-ever Canadian-focused upfronts presentation in Toronto yesterday (May 29) was headlined by two new unscripted series.

This includes Blink49 Studios’ two-part docuseries, ROMCON: Who The F**k is Jason Porter? The series follows a Toronto real estate broker who discovers the man she has been in a three-year relationship with is actually a convicted criminal. Allison Brough and Toby Dormer are onboard as executive producers, with Henry Roosevelt directing.

The series will make its world premiere at the North by Northeast festival in Toronto on June 12, before streaming on Prime Video the next day.

“We feel, to be successful as a global business, we need to think and act locally, and really in Canada, that starts with the Canadian customer and working backwards to understanding what Canadian stories will be best told to Canadians,” Mark Shopiro, head of Prime Video, Canada (pictured), tells Playback Daily. “It’s really important to have an important strategic priority for our business to be able to tell these Canadian stories.”

The streamer also announced the greenlight of the unscripted comedy series with the working title Trailer Trash, from Letterkenny executive producer Jacob Tierney. Produced in partnership with Lionsgate Canada, the series follows two brothers, owners of Young Farts RV Parts in Vegreville, Alta., who have transformed their business into a viral sensation.

It is set to release globally on the streamer in 2026.

Attraction’s comedy competition series LOL: Qui Rira Le Dernier? was renewed for a fourth season, set for an early 2026 release. The Patrick Huard-hosted series will feature Guy Jodoin, Phil Roy, Patrice L’Ecuyer, Mehdi Bousaidan, Eve Côte, Liliane Blanco-Binette, Claude Legault, Mégan Brouillard, Guylaine Tremblay and Anthony Kavanagh.

In April, Prime Video greenlit two new Quebec-based series, Attraction’s Karaoke Club and Martin Matte’s Vitrerie Joyal, co-produced with Encore Télévision. The former series, shot in Montreal, is hosted by Montreal-born actor and comedian Stéphane Rousseau, It will feature celebrities competing in a karaoke competition.

Some of those celebrities were announced at yesterday’s presentation: Karine Vanasse, Arnaud Soly, Lou-Pascal Tremblay, Debbie Lynch-White, Pierre-Yves Lord and Chloé Deblois. More participants will be revealed at a later date.

Alongside Matte, Vitrerie Joyal stars Pierre-Luc Funk, Pierre-Yves Roy-Desmarais, Marilyse Bourke, Florence Longpré, Guillaume Cyr, François Chénier, Steve Laplante, Rémi-Pierre Paquin, Sam Breton and Marcel Leboeuf. Currently shooting in Montreal, the comedy-drama will release on streamer in 2026.

Previously announced in October 2024, Sphere Media’s documentary chronicling the Canadian pop-punk band Simple Plan now has a title: Simple Plan: The Kids in the Crowd. Directed by Didier Charette, it is set for a release this summer.

Lastly, season two of Prime Video and NHL Productions’ docuseries FACEOFF: Inside the NHL, announced the full roster of players featured – including Sidney Crosby and Marc-Andre Fleury. The series, set to stream this fall, is executive produced by James Gay-Rees and Paul Martin of U.K.-based Box To Box Films; Steve Mayer and Ross Bernard for NHL Productions; and Daniel Amigone.

Regarding the lack of English scripted programming, Shopiro says the streamer is “looking at all different types of series. We’re constantly relocating our content strategy, what types of stories are out there [and] what types of stories might be most compelling to Canadians.”
