Avi Federgreen’s Toronto-based distribution firm Indiecan Entertainment has acquired the North American rights to Filipina writer-director Antoinette Jadaone’s 2024 sports drama Sunshine (pictured) – which follows a young gymnast who is striving to make the Olympics when she discovers she’s pregnant – with plans for an English-language remake.
The film hails from Anima Studios, Project 8 Projects, Cloudy Duck Pictures and Happy Infinite Productions. A theatrical and digital release is planned for Q4 2025.
Announced at the Cannes Film Festival, the deal was negotiated between Indiecan founder Federgreen, Siné Media’s Michaelangelo Masangkay and producers Dan Villegas, Geo Lomuntad and Bianca Balbuena.
The English-language remake will hail from the prodco Federgreen Entertainment and Siné, with Federgreen set to direct. There are no further details on the remake as of publication. Earlier this month, Virgil Films acquired U.S. rights to Federgreen’s free directorial debut Home Free.
The Tagalog-language film had its world premiere at the 2024 Toronto International Film Festival and also won the Crystal Bear for the Best Film at the 2025 Berlinale International Film Festival.
“From the moment Sunshine was introduced to me many months ago, I knew I wanted to share this warm-hearted and genuine story with North American audiences, whilst searching for my next film to direct as a follow-up to my passion project Home Free. Sunshine is that film,” said Federgreen in a statement.
Over the weekend at Cannes, Federgreen and Siné also announced they are teaming with Rights Cube Japan on a horror slate from director Kenichi Ugana. Details on the slate will be announced at a later date, although it will make use of the Canada-Japan coproduction agreement.
