Women In the Director’s Chair (WIDC) has announced Teresa Alfeld as the recipient of the 2025 WIDC BANFF Fellowship.
The fellowship includes mentorship and market access during the Banff World Media Festival (BANFF), which runs from June 8 to 11.
Vancouver-based Alfeld’s (pictured) work includes feature documentaries such as CBC’s Doug and the Slug and Me (2022) and Knowledge Network’s The Rankin File: Legacy of a Radical (2019)
Alfeld will be at BANFF with several scripted projects, including her original dramedy series Charlie Gauvin. The series follows a former Canadian teen pop-punk star forced to return home and relaunch her music career after losing everything in a crypto scam. Also onboard is Stefan Brogren as creative producer and star; Jennica Harper as a story consultant; and Toronto-based composer trio Blitz//Berlin.
Alfeld is also developing Okay, Boomer!, a satirical series about a millennial gig worker who stumbles into a mayoral race.
She is currently at work on her first feature screenplay, Toe Pick (working title), based on her short of the same name. It follows a disgraced figure skating champion as he attempts to rebuild his life as a coach to a young student.
“I’m thrilled to be awarded the WIDC BANFF Fellowship,” said Alfeld in a statement. “I’m so excited to bring my series Charlie Gauvin to BANFF, and I’m immensely grateful to Carol [Whiteman, WIDC co-creator] and WIDC for their incredible support.”
The 2024 recipients were Virginia Abramovich and Kate Green.
