New Wattpad adaptation among Tubi film greenlights

Kissing is the Easy Part is set to be adapted from Christine Duann’s web novel of the same name and stars Asher Angel.

Following the success of Tubi’s Wattpad adaptation Sidelined: The QB and Me, Tubi has greenlit another film based on a web novel from the Toronto- and Halifax-based company for its YA slate.

Kissing is the Easy Part, based on the web novel of the same name by Christine Duann, was announced to be adapted for Tubi by Rebecca Webb at Fox’s upfronts on Monday (May 12). The film is produced by Wattpad Webtoon Studios’ David Madden, Jason Goldberg and Aron Levitz.

Kissing is the Easy Part follows an academic overachiever that agrees to tutor his polar opposite for a college recommendation, only for sparks to fly. It stars Asher Angel (Shazam! Fury of the Gods; pictured), who executive produces alongside Toronto- and Cape Town-based Blue Ice Pictures’ Lance Samuels and Samantha Levine.

The web novel from Duann, which has 31.7 million reads on the Wattpad site, is being physically published by Wattpad Books on Nov. 18.

“Buyers are looking for an edge, something that they know has innate ability to be marketed,” David Madden, global head of entertainment at Wattpad Webtoon Studios tells Playback Daily. “The secret of the Wattpad formula is that it’s not a formula. Wattpad writers write their honest story. They write what they want to read and the platform doesn’t know who you’re related to, it just rewards the best story.”

Madden also says that Wattpad has books and webtoons with ingrained fanbases excited to see that material adapted into other mediums.

The new Tubi Wattpad adaptation follows the news that the service has greenlit Sidelined 2: Intercepted, a sequel to Sidelined: The QB and Me based on the Wattpad novel from Tay Marley. The first film was Tubi’s No. 1 film in Canada on the Fox-owned streamer following its release on Nov. 29, 2024.

The Burnaby, B.C.-based prodco behind Sidelined and its sequel, Thunderbird Entertainment’s Great Pacific Media, is behind another greenlit Tubi original in How To Lose a Popularity Contest. The film, written by Kaitlin Reilly and Dorian Keyes, stars Chase Hudson (Downfalls High) with Lindsay McAdam and Jason Fischer producing on behalf of Great Pacific Media.

The last Tubi original film greenlight announced during Fox’s upfronts is Hive starring Xochitl Gomez (Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness). It is produced by Blue Ice Pictures alongside Nick Scully, Adam Friedlander and Darren Cameron.
