The National Film Board of Canada’s (NFB) 2D-animated Hypersensitive (pictured), written, directed and animated by France-born, Montreal-based Martine Frossard, will screen in the short film competition at this year’s Cannes Film Festival.
The approximately 6-minute short, produced by the NFB’s Marc Bertrand, follows the surrealistic journey of a young woman struggling to rebuild herself in defiance of social norms.
The Short Film Palme d’Or will be handed out on May 24 during the closing ceremony of the festival.
The short will also screen in the Canadian competition of Sommets du cinéma d’animation from May 26 to 31 in Montreal.
Canadians among Gotham TV nominations
Iqaluit-born Anna Lambe is nominated in the comedy series lead performance category at this year’s Gotham TV Awards for her performance in the CBC, APTN and Netflix series North of North.
The series debuted in Netflix’s top global top ten following its April 10 premiere on the streamer and was recently renewed for season two.
Nominated in the new category Outstanding Original Film, Broadcast or Streaming is Vancouver-based Network Entertainment founder and CEO Derik Murray and line producer Stephen Sawchuk for coproducing the Questlove-directed Hulu documentary Sly Lives! (aka the Burden of Black Genius).
This marks the second year the Gotham Awards have had a separate TV ceremony. The winners will be announced in a ceremony on June 2 at Cipriani Wall Street in New York City.
Quebec Academy announces emerging talent grant recipients
The Academy of Canadian Cinema and Television – Quebec section announced the five recipients of the 2025 Academy Grants for Emerging Talent.
Alongside offering scholarships worth $4,000 each, the program offers emerging creators who have completed or are in the process of completing training in film, television or digital media to complete a paid internship with an audiovisual company or production company. Two of the five spots are reserved for those from underrepresented groups.
The recipients are 2D animator Adriana Rubio-Zelada; filmmaker and director of photography Calvin Liu; screenwriter and director Danielle Tudor; sound recordist and boom operator Samuele Cacchione-Martiliani; and director of photography Zoé Rondeau.
