Women in Film and Television Toronto (WIFT+ Toronto) has selected eight projects for its annual showcase.
The filmmakers’ most recent projects, all short films, have been selected to be a part of the showcase on May 14 at Toronto’s Scotiabank Theatre. In addition to an Audience Choice Award, a jury determines winners for best writer, director and best of the showcase. The winners of the four categories will receive more than $20,000 in cash and in-kind prizes.
The projects include Clementine, directed by Beth Evans and produced by Evans and Allie Dunbar; writer-director Paola Contreras’ Spanish-language Duck, produced by Ingrid Vargas; A Fermenting Woman, directed and produced by Priscilla Galvez; and writer, director and animator Natalie Turcotte’s His and Hers.
Rounding out the projects are Lauren Eden’s My Digital Boyfriend, which she cowrote and coproduced with Marissa Bondi; director, writer and producer ZhiMin Hu’s The Teacup; Peter Pasyk’s The Understudy, coproduced with Genna Megaw; and writer-director Ace Kazkayasi’s The Window.
“At a time when supporting our local Canadian screen industry is more important than ever, I’m incredibly proud of our selection of films that showcase the remarkable talent and creativity of women and non-binary filmmakers in our community,” said WIFT+ Toronto executive director Karen Bruce in a statement.
